The San Francisco-based company Anthropic announced that the U.S. government has mandated the suspension of two of its artificial intelligence systems, citing concerns over national security. The systems, named Fable 5 and Mythos 5, are affected by this directive.
National Security Concerns
On a recent Friday night, Anthropic disclosed the government’s order to suspend access for all foreign nationals to these A.I. models. This suspension affects both external users and foreign nationals employed by the company. According to a social media post by Anthropic, they needed to swiftly disable both models for compliance purposes.
The new A.I. system, Claude Mythos, has been at the center of security discussions. Even though it was introduced in April, it was withheld from public use due to worries that it could be exploited by hackers targeting computer networks. This concern has resonated strongly in both Washington and Silicon Valley, highlighting A.I.’s potential as a significant cyber threat.
Security Measures and Government Intervention
Anthropic had shared the Claude system with roughly 40 organizations. These organizations are involved in maintaining critical computer infrastructure, using the system to bolster security by addressing vulnerabilities to prevent hacker exploitation. The Commerce Department issued the order to restrict access, as per an anonymous source familiar with the situation. The duration of these restrictions is still uncertain.
