WASHINGTON (AP) — Unemployment benefits filings reached their lowest point in ten weeks, indicating sustained low layoffs across the United States. The Labor Department reports that in the week concluding on July 11, 208,000 Americans applied for jobless aid, a decrease of 8,000 compared to the previous week. This figure significantly undercuts analysts’ predictions of 219,000 new applications, as surveyed by FactSet.

Weekly unemployment filings serve as a proxy for layoffs, providing near real-time insight into the U.S. job market’s health. The government’s comprehensive jobs report earlier this month highlighted that June experienced a slowdown in hiring, with only 57,000 jobs added. This marks less than half of the preceding month’s total, reflecting companies’ hesitance to increase workforce numbers.

The unemployment rate experienced a slight decline, dropping to 4.2% from 4.3% in May. However, this decrease largely resulted from a reduced number of active job seekers, who were no longer counted as unemployed.

June’s modest hiring contrasts with the preceding three months’ job gains surge, alleviating concerns that the conflict in Iran could destabilize the already fragile labor market. Since emerging from the pandemic-induced recession, weekly jobless aid applications have remained within the 200,000 to 250,000 range.

Hiring began to slow approximately two years ago, further tapering in 2025 due to factors such as tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, his reduction of the federal workforce, and sustained high interest rates aimed at inflation control. Companies like Verizon, UPS, Amazon, Disney, Starbucks, and Walmart have recently downsized their workforces. Microsoft announced last week that it would cut 4,800 positions, amounting to 2.1% of its global workforce, affecting many employees in its Xbox division.

The reported layoffs data from Thursday indicates a decline in the four-week average of weekly jobless claims, a measure that accounts for volatility, adjusting downward by 4,750 to 214,250. The total number of unemployment benefit filings for the week ending July 4 decreased by 16,000 to 1.81 million, a figure reflecting a historically healthy level.
