Ukraine’s Innovative Use of Sea Drones and Robotics in Combat
Ukrainian forces have launched a groundbreaking operation using a sea drone to transport a gun-equipped robot into Russian-held territory in southern Ukraine. The operation involved the 123rd Territorial Defense Brigade, as shown in a short 57-second video shared by Ukrainian drone experts. The footage captures the moment when a ground robot, situated on a floating platform, navigates towards a narrow shoreline, detaches from the sea drone, and moves onto land.
As the sea drone promptly retreats, the robot targets a distant objective and opens fire. Although Newsweek hasn’t independently confirmed the video’s authenticity, it highlights the rapid advancement and deployment of drones in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Both Russian and Ukrainian military forces continue to update their arsenal of flying, ground-based, and waterborne drones, drawing global military attention.
While Ukraine’s aerial drones and unmanned boats loaded with explosives are widely recognized, its expanding fleet of ground vehicles (UGVs) remains less noticed. However, these ground drones play a crucial role in various combat scenarios, such as evacuating wounded soldiers, laying mines, or engaging enemy positions.
Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, reported in April that Ukrainian forces had reclaimed Russian-held territory using only robotic devices. The 1st Unmanned Systems Battalion of the 123rd Brigade praised this modern warfare strategy on Telegram recently.
Targeting a Strategic Russian Position
The video from the brigade includes an animation showing drones being launched from southern Ukraine towards the northern end of the Kinburn Spit. This spit, positioned at the mouth of the Dnieper River, influences vessel movements to and from the Ukrainian port city of Mykolaiv. Notably, Russian forces have used the Kinburn Spit to stage artillery attacks on Ukrainian-controlled areas across the river.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, they have retained control of this crucial region. Ukrainian forces claimed that their flag was hoisted on the Kinburn Spit in late June, signifying a tactical victory in pushing back Russian troops. Nevertheless, Ukraine’s naval spokesperson clarified that, despite certain successful incursions, Russian presence on the spit persists.
Recent statements from influential Russian military bloggers suggest that Ukrainian efforts have severely disrupted Russian logistical capabilities on the Kinburn Spit, complicating their operations in this essential area.
