Ukrainian forces have made significant advancements in the Donetsk region by effectively misleading Russia’s military leadership. A Ukrainian commander shared that the success stemmed from keeping strategic gains hidden. Reports of Ukraine’s progress against the Russian forces north of Lyman were confirmed only recently. Ukraine’s Operation Vivaldi played a crucial role in preventing Russian encirclement of the ‘Fortress Belt’ due to strategic silence, according to Major Maksym Zhorin, deputy commander of Ukraine’s 3rd Army Corps.
Operation Vivaldi and Its Achievements
The ‘Fortress Belt’ consists of heavily fortified cities and positions in Donetsk, forming the backbone of Ukraine’s defense in the eastern Donbas region. This area is a primary target for Russian forces under President Vladimir Putin. Military analyst Giorgi Revishvili emphasized the importance of operational security at this stage of the conflict, dominated by intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and drones.
Brigadier General Andrii Biletskyi, leading Ukraine’s 3rd Army Corps, explained the Russian strategy of converging pincers in Barvinkove, aiming to capture Donetsk Oblast entirely. He noted Ukraine’s success in derailing this plan through strict operational security and counter-drone measures, which undermined the Russian forces’ operational awareness.
Secrecy in Ukrainian Advances
Ukrainian forces maintained secrecy with a protective drone system, neutralizing approximately 20,000 Russian drones, as reported by Major Zhorin. The operational surprise was further enhanced during the Oleksandrivka counteroffensive, where flag-raising missions were conducted at safe distances.
Revishvili highlighted the importance of limiting public discussions about specific operations to ensure that Russian forces operated with incomplete information. In contrast, Russian forces are known for misinformation within their command chain to secure favorable treatment and avoid negative consequences.
Gaining an Edge with Drone Capabilities
The Ukrainian 3rd Army Corps reported an intermediate-range strike campaign in Luhansk that degraded Russian fuel supplies and hindered their drone operations. This development allowed Ukrainian forces to gain the upper hand in drone capabilities, supporting mechanized advances towards Lyman.
Revishvili credited Ukraine’s meticulous planning, especially efforts to suppress Russian firing positions and unmanned systems. Favorable weather conditions also played a role in disrupting Russian infiltration and advancing Ukrainian forces in areas like Serednie.
The Institute for the Study of War noted that both Ukrainian and Russian forces are exploring mechanized maneuvers to break out of positional warfare, but Kyiv’s strategies have proven more effective. Revishvili concluded that effective planning and execution make maneuver warfare possible even on a battlefield crowded with drones and surveillance.
