United Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Madison Due to Unruly Passenger
A United Airlines flight heading to Minneapolis from Chicago made an emergency landing in Madison, Wisconsin. The diversion occurred on Friday night following a passenger’s alleged attempt to enter the cockpit according to air traffic control audio.
The flight left Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport around 8 p.m. Central Daylight Time. United Airlines stated that the plane landed safely to handle a security incident involving an unruly passenger. This information was shared with Fox News Digital.
Approximately 90 minutes after taking off, the aircraft touched down at Dane County Regional Airport in Madison. Flight tracking data supports this timeline. Though United did not provide details of the incident, audio from air traffic control reviewed by WISN confirmed that the passenger tried multiple times to breach the cockpit.
I do not believe they ever cuffed him, but they were able to finally get control of him after multiple attempts to try to breach the cockpit. I believe at this point he is seated in a seat and flanked with law enforcement officers on either side.
This statement from a crew member is heard in the air traffic control recording.
Further insights come from scanner audio from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office, reviewed by Fox News Digital. A member from the sheriff’s office commented, “We’re getting word that there is five off-duty law enforcement on the plane that have the individual detained.” Authorities removed the disruptive passenger around 10:30 p.m. CDT, as indicated by communications from the sheriff’s office.
On May 29, 2026, the FBI was alerted about a commercial flight diverted to Dane County Regional Airport. The FBI’s Milwaukee Madison Resident Agency, along with local law enforcement, acted swiftly. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office detained a subject, after which passengers were able to continue their journey. This was confirmed in a statement shared with FOX 6 Milwaukee.
The incident drew responses from various authorities. Fox News Digital reached out to the Madison Police Department, Dane County Sheriff’s Office, TSA, the FBI, and the Dane County Regional Airport for further information.
