The Vatican has recently taken the significant step of excommunicating the priesthood of a breakaway Catholic group. This group, known as the Society of St. Pius X, has faced this decisive action due to their continued defiance against the mainstream Roman Catholic Church.
A recent event took place in Écône, Switzerland, where this traditionalist society consecrated new bishops despite clear opposition from Pope Leo XIV. The Vatican’s decision marks the largest division within Roman Catholicism in decades, aiming to encourage the group’s followers to return to the main church community.
However, this communication did not have its intended effect. Many members, particularly those in Argentina, Italy, and Switzerland, remain steadfast in their allegiance to the Society of St. Pius X. Blandine Guillaumin, a 42-year-old teacher in France associated with the group, expressed resilience in light of the Vatican’s actions. Despite the threat of excommunication, she remains committed to the faction. “We are sure we are doing God’s will,” she stated, highlighting her belief in the society’s version of Catholicism as the true representation of the faith.
The background of this standoff dates back 56 years. The society was founded in 1970 as a reaction against the modernization initiated by the Roman Catholic Church’s Second Vatican Council (1962-1965). A primary point of contention for the society is the council’s decision to permit services in local languages. The Society of St. Pius X continues to uphold the Traditional Latin Mass, claiming it maintains the traditional sanctity and mystery of the service.
