Victor Wembanyama has emerged as a leading figure in basketball, celebrated for his skill and presence on the court. During his third NBA season, he guided the San Antonio Spurs to the Finals, although they eventually lost to the New York Knicks in a series that concluded in five games. Wembanyama’s performance earned him his first Defensive Player of the Year award and an All-NBA selection, underscoring his significant impact.
The French-born forward began the 2026-27 season with high expectations placed on him. Standing at 7-foot-4, Wembanyama was a preseason favorite for the MVP award. The Spurs were also considered strong contenders for the championship.
However, Wembanyama’s postseason journey altered public perception. Previously admired, he began to gain a reputation as a villain. During the Western Conference semifinals, an incident involving his elbow hitting Minnesota Timberwolves’ Naz Reid fueled allegations of unsportsmanlike conduct. As the Finals progressed, his intense defense against Jalen Brunson inflamed Knicks fans.
Despite criticism, Wembanyama expressed indifference to his portrayal as a villain. Speaking to “60 Minutes,” he stated, “I’m not paying attention to this during the Finals.” His focus remained firmly on the game.
Throughout the Finals, Wembanyama recognized the thin line between maintaining a competitive edge and overstepping boundaries. Reflecting on his experiences, he acknowledged, “It showed my limits more than anything else. Going out there, you need to play basketball. You don’t need to beat the s— out of people if you wanna win.” This introspection after the Finals highlighted his growth as both a player and an individual.
Off the court, Wembanyama drew attention during the national anthem before some Finals games. He stood with his arms crossed before Game 1 but was absent during the anthems for Games 3 and 4. He has yet to explain these actions publicly.
Despite the controversies, Wembanyama has been a consistent performer. Averaging 25 points per game, he has played in all five of the Spurs’ regular-season games so far. The team is set to face the Timberwolves in their next match.
