A Virginia mother, Karyann Parkinson, is challenging a criminal charge and her placement on the state’s child abuse and neglect registry. The charges were brought after her 5-year-old son, Sam, was stopped by security while walking alone in their gated community.
Parkinson explained that her son was on a familiar path near a pond, collecting goose feathers when a security guard found him and returned him home. This incident led to involvement from police and Child Protective Services. Although her six-month jail sentence was suspended, the charge remains.
Parkinson was convicted of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a first-degree misdemeanor, and added to Virginia’s Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry for seven years.
Karyann Parkinson: Seen as a drastic parenting choice, despite familiarity of neighborhood.
She spoke out, trying to clarify the situation as seen in media headlines that portrayed Sam as being alone near a body of water. Parkinson explained the path was a known route and emphasized she did not send Sam to play at the pond.
The placement on the Child Protective Services registry significantly impacts Parkinson’s ability to volunteer in her son’s classroom until he reaches sixth grade. She commented on the need to avoid parenting driven by fear of the unknown.
Sam was unsettled by the event but has since moved on. Parkinson noted that they worked to reassure him, emphasizing he did nothing wrong. Despite initial confusion, Sam is now less affected by the incident.
