Vice President JD Vance highlighted President Donald Trump’s economic policies during an event in Brewer, Maine. He appeared with former Republican Governor Paul LePage, who is attempting a political comeback in the midterm elections. LePage is contesting the race in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District against Democrat Matthew Dunlap.
Currently held by Democratic Representative Jared Golden, who is retiring instead of seeking a fifth term, the district often leans Republican. Although it supported some Democrats, including Golden, it has a discernible independent streak. Republicans view LePage as having a solid chance to gain the seat with Golden not seeking reelection.
LePage showed strong support in the 2024 election, winning the district by nine points. Despite this, Democrats consider the race competitive, especially with Golden’s history of winning in the district. Analysts suggest the current national landscape might favor Democrats due to Trump’s dropping national approval rating.
During the event at a defense facility in Brewer, Vance praised LePage, saying, “A guy like Paul LePage. He is not a go-along-to-get-along politician. He is an independent-minded guy, but he is independent for you. There is one thing I know, that Paul cares about and that’s fighting hard for his people every single day. We’ve got to send Paul LePage to Congress.”
The race is anticipated to be a competitive highlight of the midterms. LePage, well-known from his time as governor, serves from 2011 to 2019. Dunlap holds the position of state auditor and was previously secretary of state.
Dunlap campaign manager, Harry Burke, voiced concern over LePage’s potential impact in Congress. “LePage supported Medicaid cuts that are shutting down clinics, tariffs that are jacking up prices, and an unnecessary foreign war that’s made winter heating oil less affordable,” Burke noted. He added that national Republican figures are attempting to salvage LePage’s campaign, yet Mainers prefer a candidate like Matt Dunlap committed to lowering costs and safeguarding Social Security and Medicaid.”
Polls in the LePage vs. Dunlap Race
Independent polling data remains scarce, but recent internal surveys have been conducted. In February, the University of New Hampshire released a poll indicating LePage held a narrow lead of 47% to Dunlap’s 46% among 522 likely voters. The survey had a margin of error of ±4.5.
A Tulchin Research poll, an internal survey for Dunlap, suggested Dunlap had a slight edge over LePage at 49% to 48%, surveying 600 likely voters with a margin of error of ±3.99. Meanwhile, an NRCC-sponsored poll by co/efficient showed LePage with a ten-point lead.
LePage’s Position in Prediction Markets
Prediction markets, as of Monday, favored LePage. He had a 61% likelihood of winning on Kalshi and 56% on Polymarket. Traders utilize these markets to buy and sell contracts tied to political outcomes, reflecting probability estimates based on polling, fundraising, and political trends.
Maine’s Second District Trends
Maine’s Second District has trended more conservative over recent decades. While it supported Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012, it has backed Trump in recent elections. The district includes large rural areas and urban centers like Augusta, Bangor, and Lewiston. These cities and coastal areas have historically balanced Republican margins, aiding Golden’s previous successes despite increasing Republican support in rural populations.
Statewide, Maine has leaned Democratic, with Trump never achieving a win there. Although he lost by seven points in 2024 while carrying the national popular vote, Republican Senator Susan Collins has maintained her position through her appeal and bipartisan reputation. She faces Democrat Troy Jackson in what is anticipated to be her hardest race yet.
GOP and Democratic Strategies for 2026
If LePage manages to flip the seat, it would mark a significant Republican gain this election cycle. At Trump +9, it’s now one of the most Republican-favored seats held by Democrats. The situation has encouraged hopes among Republicans for flipping given Golden’s exit.
Nevertheless, the Democrats continue to invest in the district. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has endorsed Dunlap, emphasizing a more progressive candidate profile. Dunlap holds an endorsement from California Representative Ro Khanna.
In the coming months, Dunlap and LePage will make greater efforts to connect with Maine voters. At present, forecasters see LePage as the frontrunner. Both the Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball classify the contest as Likely Republican.
