HOUSTON — On Wednesday, the Chicago White Sox faced the Houston Astros. The game remained scoreless in the eighth inning with Tristan Peters on third base and Drew Romo on first base with no outs. The Astros’ defense was prepared, bringing the infield in. Sam Antonacci then hit a grounder to Jeremy Peña at shortstop. Peters attempted to score but was thrown out at home.
White Sox manager Will Venable commented, “On the first and third there with Tristan, you go right there and try to get into a rundown, but trying to stay out of the double play, which really hurts you.” Despite the attempt, the Sox managed to keep runners on first and second with one out. Munetaka Murakami hit a single to right field, but Romo hesitated slightly off second and stayed at third.
Romo explained, “Just a hard-hit ball to right field. If the ball is hit right at him and I take off running without looking, then it’s a double play.” With the bases loaded, Miguel Vargas hit into an inning-ending double play, leaving the Sox stranded.
Davis Martin started for the White Sox, performing well by scattering five hits, striking out three, and walking one in 5 2/3 scoreless innings. Martin shared his approach, saying, “Just try to take it one pitch at a time. Convicted with every pitch. Can’t get three outs with one pitch.” It marked his return after being sidelined due to a blister that led to his placement on the injured list.
The Astros seized their opportunity in the bottom of the eighth. Nelson Velázquez hit a two-out, two-run single that proved to be decisive, securing a 2-0 victory in front of 24,025 fans at Daikin Park.
The White Sox, currently leading the American League Central, maintain a three-game advantage over the Cleveland Guardians despite their loss. The Guardians faced a heavy defeat against the Toronto Blue Jays, losing 11-0. Venable acknowledged missed opportunities, stating, “Just opportunities that we had and weren’t able to cash any of those runs in.”
Earlier in the game, the Sox confronted Astros starter Hayden Wesneski with runners on first and second in the second inning. Chase Meidroth’s soft line drive to Jose Altuve resulted in a crucial double play. Altuve dropped the ball before throwing to second for a force out. Andrew Benintendi, caught in a rundown, was tagged out, ending the inning.
Astros’ Wesneski pitched strongly over seven innings, allowing one hit and striking out five while walking two. The White Sox struggled in the eighth, unable to capitalize on opportunities presented by Astros reliever AJ Blubaugh.
Venable reflected, “We talked about pinch-running for Romo. At the same time, he’s catching a shutout there, with reliever Sean Newcomb going back out. Definitely a thought, and obviously, if you go back, probably would have chosen to do it.”
The Astros loaded the bases with one out after a single, a walk, and Altuve being hit by a pitch. The Sox challenged the hit-by-pitch ruling, but it stood. Newcomb managed a force at home plate, but Velázquez’s sharp single drove in the only two runs of the game.
Josh Hader closed the game with a perfect ninth inning, sealing the victory for the Astros. Romo reflected, “We had a lot of opportunities. Our pitching was really good. Davis did great. The bullpen did great. We had our chances to score on offense, but we didn’t come through. It’s nobody’s fault in particular. It’s just a collective group thing.”
