The Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Guardians have been evenly matched throughout their encounters this season. Across 16 games, including the regular season and the first three games of the American League Division Series, they have been separated by only a single run. The Guardians have scored 69 runs while the Sox have tallied 68. According to White Sox manager Will Venable, the matchups have been remarkable. He said, “I think we’re very different teams, but the way that these clubs are built as far as the character of each team, it’s very clear that you got a bunch of good guys on both sides that go out and play the game the right way. They’re very talented players. They play very hard.”
The rivalry offers fierce competition but also mutual respect, with the teams showcasing their best efforts. Venable notes, “It’s been fun to watch. It’s tough and obviously they’re very competitive, but we’re very competitive, and it’s been a great battle.” As the Sox hold a 2-1 edge in the series, they prepare for Game 4.
Game 3 Insights
Sox manager Venable considered Game 3 a “very good tutorial” for the next chapter in the series. Reflecting on the game amid the heightened atmosphere, he commented on how the energetic environment impacted the team. “We talked about it (Wednesday), that we knew this was going to be a juiced-up environment, and I thought it impacted us. I thought you saw us chase a lot more,” Venable said. The Sox experienced one of their highest chase rates of the season.
In Game 3, the White Sox struck out 19 times—a record for a nine-inning postseason game. Outfielder Tristan Peters remarked, “Obviously you play in front of a crowd like that, you get amped up and maybe swing at pitches you wouldn’t normally swing at. I also think, too, the offense (Wednesday), we ran into a few balls, but they also found gloves.”
Facing a Familiar Opponent
Starting pitcher Parker Messick of the Guardians is no stranger to the Sox, having faced them multiple times. Messick’s performance was notable in Game 1, where he allowed two runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings. “We’ve seen him a lot,” Peters said. “I think we know how he’s going to pitch us.”
White Sox Pitching Strategy
For Game 4, Hagen Smith has been called upon as the opener. Smith, who pitched two-thirds of an inning previously, expressed confidence saying, “I feel good.” Additional pitching options include Erick Fedde and Anthony Kay. Although Smith conceded one run on one hit with two walks in his previous outing, Venable expressed trust in him. “I thought Hagen looked good. I thought the stuff looked good,” Venable said, remaining optimistic about his team’s starter for the game.
