William P. Young Discusses Forgiveness in His New Book
Author William P. Young’s latest book, “Return to the Shack,” focuses on the theme of forgiveness. Young highlighted Erika Kirk as a strong example of forgiveness. Kirk is the widow of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and made headlines last year by forgiving the man accused of killing her husband.
Young’s earlier novel, “The Shack,” explores a father’s healing journey after his daughter’s tragic death. The story features a mysterious invitation from God to visit a shack, meeting an unconventional Holy Trinity. Although some religious readers found it controversial, the book resonated with audiences and inspired a film adaptation in 2017. In the sequel, forgiveness is central as the protagonist, Mack, confronts his daughter’s killer.
“We need to distinguish between forgiveness and reconciliation,” Young explained to Fox News Digital. “Forgiveness allows the harmed to live without being haunted by past events. It is possible to forgive without regaining trust. Reconciliation, on the other hand, is a long and challenging process that helps the perpetrator to become trustworthy.”
Kirk’s decision to forgive her husband’s accused killer at a Turning Point USA event demonstrated this approach. During Charlie Kirk’s memorial service, Erika Kirk stated, “Our Savior said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.’ That young man … I forgive him because it was what Christ did, and it’s what Charlie would do.”
Young found Kirk’s actions to be a compelling reflection of his message. “Erika decided not to let the tragedy own her,” he said. “She refused to be confined to the same metaphorical prison as the perpetrator.”
The message of love being more powerful than violence is crucial to Young’s beliefs. He acknowledged that society often views violence as powerful, but he emphasizes that love can incite real change. Reflecting on his own past, Young shared that forgiving his abusive father showed him that violence doesn’t solve anything. Instead, love, care, and understanding lead to healing and transformation.
“Return to the Shack: A Journey into Redemption” will be available in October. Young encourages readers to consider forgiveness as a path to redemption. He believes love outweighs violence and can lead to profound positive changes.
