William Shatner and Daughter Share Their Cancer Journeys

William Shatner recently opened up about a significant health scare that nearly went unnoticed. At 95, Shatner discovered a lump that his first doctor dismissed. However, a second opinion revealed a stage 4 malignant melanoma diagnosis.

Life-Saving Second Opinion

During an interview on “CBS Mornings,” Shatner spoke about his initial doctor’s response, “Oh, it’s a salivary gland. Just massage it there.” Still concerned, Shatner went to a doctor friend for advice. After examining Shatner, the friend insisted, “You better get this out.”

An oncologist confirmed the seriousness, stating, “We got to take that out now.” The cancer had spread to Shatner’s brain and lungs, but prompt surgery and two years of immunotherapy were ultimately life-saving.

Shared Battles with Cancer

During Shatner’s cancer battle, his daughter, Melanie Shatner Gretsch, faced her own diagnosis. Nearly a year before discovering her father’s illness, Gretsch found a lump in her breast, a concern initially missed by a mammogram. Trusting her instincts, she pursued further examination.

Gretsch received a diagnosis of HER2-positive breast cancer that had spread to her chest’s lymph nodes. She said, “Something just said, ‘you need to check again.’” Her aggressive cancer necessitated intense treatments, including chemotherapy, radiation, a double mastectomy, and immunotherapy.

Family Support and Recovery

Gretsch described a pivotal moment of fear during her treatment when she needed her father’s support. “I was just in one of those moments where you want your daddy,” she said. By the end of 2024, both were declared cancer-free, marking an emotional milestone for the family.

Gretsch recalled sharing the news with her father, which moved him to tears, “It was the third time in my life I had heard him cry.” Despite these challenges, Shatner continues to engage in work with projects like books, podcasts, and music on the horizon.
