A woman was shot by New York City police in Times Square on a recent Monday afternoon after allegedly attacking multiple people while armed with knives, according to law enforcement officials. Authorities reported that the incident occurred near West 43rd Street and Seventh Avenue, where officers responded to reports of a person with a knife.
Police said the woman had allegedly slashed at least two individuals before they opened fire. Eyewitnesses informed local media that the suspect was armed with two knives and ignored commands from officers to drop the weapons.
New York City councilman Carl Wilson shared on social media, “I’ve been made aware of a disturbing incident in Times Square this afternoon where a suspect wielding knives was shot by police at 42nd and 7th. NYPD is still investigating. 42nd to 43rd on 7th Ave is closed to foot traffic while the investigation continues, and there are no more outstanding perpetrators. Details will be shared as soon as they are available.”
Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal also conveyed similar information on his social media page.
The conditions of the suspect and victims remain unknown at this time. Police stated that there is no evidence suggesting the incident was linked to terrorism.
The NYPD indicated that additional details would be provided shortly. Newsweek has reached out to Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s office for a statement.
New York City Emergency Management has advised locals to anticipate delays in the area, with the section of 7th Avenue closed to traffic passing through the heart of Times Square.
This stabbing incident took place in one of the busiest and most heavily policed areas of New York City, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors daily. The attack follows several violent occurrences reported in Times Square and its vicinity in recent months. Just last week, the NYPD released appeals for information regarding a stabbing involving an MTA employee at the Times Square-42nd Street subway complex.
Crime and public safety in Midtown Manhattan have continued to be a significant focus for city officials and business groups since the pandemic began. Although crime in general has seen a downward trend citywide in recent years, Times Square and the surrounding Midtown area still experience frequent incidents of assault, robbery, retail theft, and issues related to mental health crises. The area’s dense crowds, major transit hubs, and heavy tourist traffic contribute to the continuation of these issues.
