Zelenskyy Accuses Russia of Aiding Iran in Targeting U.S. Bases

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced plans to provide the U.S. with evidence alleging that Russia is aiding Iran in targeting American bases in the Middle East through satellite surveillance. Zelenskyy stated on X that since early July, Russian satellites have been monitoring Gulf states and U.S. military bases, with the images reportedly being shared with Iran. He mentioned a correlation between the satellite surveillance and subsequent Iranian strikes, suggesting a strategic alignment.

This accusation of Russia assisting Iran is not unprecedented. Reports indicate that, merely six days into the conflict, a senior U.S. official noted Russia’s intelligence sharing with Iran concerning U.S. positions. These claims have persisted in the media, with hints of China’s potential involvement.

During a recent Capitol Hill hearing, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth addressed inquiries about Russia and China’s support for Iran, confirming their involvement but maintaining that the extent should remain classified to protect security interests.

“There’s definitely adversary alignment, attempts to do so, and there are many ways that we deter that,” Hegseth remarked. “But there are ways in which both of those countries are limiting, at different levels, enabling some of the things Iran is doing, yes.”

However, President Trump contradicted these claims on Truth Social, stating his belief that neither China nor Russia assists Iran, based on assurances received from their leaders. He emphasized that any participation would be against their interests.

The U.S. currently deploys around 45,000 military personnel in the Middle East, maintaining several bases and naval fleets in the region. Nonetheless, Zelenskyy highlighted specific cases of Russian activity assisting Iran. He specified that on July 19 and 20, Russian satellites monitored four air bases across Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait, suggesting a deliberate effort to assist Iran.

“The purpose is clear. None of us in the world should turn a blind eye to one very simple fact: evil always seeks ways to make things worse and spread further. Russia must be stopped. This war must be stopped. Pressure on the aggressor must work,” Zelenskyy asserted.

Casualties reported include eighteen American service members since the Iran war began. This includes fatalities from recent attacks, such as the assault on the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan and the controlled demolition of an Iranian drone in Iraq. Earlier in the year, six U.S. personnel were killed in an Iranian strike in Kuwait, while others perished in incidents in Iraq and Saudi Arabia.

Injuries from Iranian airstrikes have affected nearly 100 U.S. service members, contributing to the ongoing toll in the region.
