Zion Rose’s Unexpected Rise to MLB
Zion Rose’s path to professional baseball has been a journey marked by resilience and talent. Despite dealing with injuries and a position change, former Brother Rice star Zion Rose has reached the Major League Baseball (MLB). Rose played for the Crusaders for three seasons before transferring to IMG Academy in Florida. He then experienced collegiate success at Louisville. On Saturday, his MLB dream came true sooner than expected.
“It’s been my dream for a long time, so seeing it realized was amazing,” Rose shared at a press conference. “Experiencing this with my family and supporters means a lot. I’m grateful to be here.”
The Kansas City Royals selected Rose with the sixth overall pick in the first round of the MLB draft in Philadelphia. At 21, this outfielder, named the 2022 Daily Southtown Baseball Player of the Year, was expected to be a late first-round selection. However, the Royals surprised many by picking him earlier.
Before the draft, Rose was prepared for any outcome. “I didn’t want to limit myself. I assumed I would go high and left the rest to chance. The Royals clearly saw potential in me, and I’m thankful.”
Brother Rice coach Sean McBride shared his excitement about Rose’s draft. “I’m at a loss for words. We knew early on he had high potential. He’s worked hard, even through injuries. I’m incredibly proud of him.”
Injuries sidelined Rose for part of the spring, but he excelled with a .417 average, six homers, and 24 stolen bases in 36 games for Louisville. Transitioning to an outfielder after playing catcher in high school, he adapted well to his new role. Previously, he scored a .496 batting average in his final season at Brother Rice.
Many of Rose’s former teammates believed in his potential for the big leagues. Bryce Nevils, another talented player, foresaw Rose’s success. “Zion has a unique mindset. He taught us to be intentional during practice. He was always improving.” Many Chicago athletes are now even more motivated to reach professional levels.
Though Rose’s journey included time away from Brother Rice, the community remains proud. Coach McBride recalls, “During Zion’s year at IMG, we made it to state, cheered by his family. They will always be Crusaders. It all worked out with him as the sixth overall pick, which is thrilling.”
Rose aims to make his mark in the Royals organization. “I play with intensity. I have areas to develop, like power, but I’ll consistently perform. I’ll do my job.”
