49ers Coach Kyle Shanahan Attends Training Camp Post-Car Accident

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan made an appearance at the San Francisco 49ers training camp following reports of his involvement in a car accident earlier this month that resulted in multiple injuries.

Shanahan was seen on the field alongside 49ers general manager John Lynch, standing in the center behind the defense during the team period, according to The Athletic’s Matt Barrows. He wore sunglasses and a soft cast on his left hand, and the swelling in his face had notably subsided since the accident.

Players such as Kyle Juszczyk, Fred Warner, and Dre Greenlaw greeted Shanahan warmly during his visit, which lasted just over 30 minutes.

The 49ers released a report on Saturday confirming the head coach’s “non-life-threatening injuries” from the crash. These injuries resulted in his “limited” participation during the training camp.

Shanahan’s injuries included a broken nose, three broken ribs, and a broken hand. He received over 40 stitches to his face and suffered a severe concussion from the July 14 incident near his home in northern California.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Nick Wagoner reported that 49ers assistant head coach Chris Foerster, aged 64, is stepping in to handle some of Shanahan’s responsibilities until his full recovery. Lynch mentioned that a collective effort would be necessary to substitute for the head coach.

Last season, Shanahan led San Francisco to a successful 12-5 record and a place in the NFL Playoffs. They managed to beat the Philadelphia Eagles at home before being defeated by the Seattle Seahawks, who won the Super Bowl that season.

San Francisco is among the top contenders for the 2027 Super Bowl, particularly after acquiring Pro Bowl wide receiver Mike Evans during the offseason. This boosts the offense for fourth-year quarterback Brock Purdy, potentially enhancing their performance in the NFC.

The 49ers’ preseason schedule kicks off with a home game against the Tennessee Titans on Aug. 13. It is unclear whether Foerster will be acting as the head coach for that match, as Shanahan must clear concussion protocols before resuming full coaching duties.

There is optimism that Shanahan will coach in the 49ers’ first regular-season game on Sept. 10 against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia.
