Exploring the Architectural Legacy of Amâncio ‘Pancho’ Guedes in Maputo

During a trip to Maputo, Mozambique, I took a ride on a tuk-tuk motorcycle taxi with Vincent Acovino, a fellow producer from All Things Considered. Our primary mission in the country was to report on changes in U.S. funding for AIDS in Africa. However, an unexpected adventure unfolded when we turned our attention to the city’s architecture.

Vincent noticed first the distinct charm of some concrete apartment blocks and government offices. With a half-day to spare, we set out on an improvised architectural tour, unearthing the works of Amâncio ‘Pancho’ Guedes, a notable Portuguese-born architect. His creations, dating back to the 1950s and ’60s, left a unique mark on Maputo’s urban landscape. Among his designs are the Prédio Abreu, Santos e Rocha, the Smiling Lion apartment block, and the Lemon Squeezer church.

Inside The Dragon House, a small interior stairwell contains a mural crafted from black and white stone depicting a dragon with a toothy grin. This artistic touch transforms the otherwise dim space into a place of intrigue. Guedes’ portfolio in Maputo includes over 500 buildings, ranging from churches to bakeries. His work is characterized by the bold use of heavy materials and innovative shapes and murals.

Critics describe Guedes’ style as ‘Eclectic Modernist.’ He skillfully blended sculptural and figurative elements with practical functions and local identity. Despite Maputo’s changing landscape, the presence of Guedes’ work remains significant. Discovering his architectural fingerprint in the city provided a unique and engaging experience. Riding through the streets in an open-air tuk-tuk, hunting for his creations, was akin to an Easter egg hunt with concrete treasures.
