A traveler with measles may have exposed passengers at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and guests at a nearby hotel, according to health officials. The incident occurred after the traveler arrived in Los Angeles County earlier this month.
Details of the Incident
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is examining a confirmed case of measles involving a traveler who arrived on Cathay Pacific Flight CX 884 on June 11. During their stay in Los Angeles County, the traveler was infectious, potentially exposing others at LAX and the Hilton Los Angeles Airport Hotel.
This marks the sixth measles case reported in Los Angeles County this year. With summer travel increasing, the risk of exposure may rise as international visitors come for FIFA World Cup events in the area.
Exposure Sites and Times
Health officials noted that those present at the Tom Bradley International Terminal between 10 a.m. and noon on June 11 may have been exposed. Additionally, a possible exposure was identified at the Hilton Los Angeles Airport Hotel between 11:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. the same day.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is collaborating with local health departments to alert passengers seated near the infected traveler on the international flight.
Post-Exposure Monitoring
Individuals at either location during the specified times could develop symptoms between seven and 21 days following exposure. July 2 is the final day to watch for symptoms.
Preventive Measures
“As measles cases increase, it is important that residents take steps to make sure they are fully protected,” stated Dr. Muntu Davis, Los Angeles County Health Officer.
The MMR vaccine remains the safest and most effective method to prevent measles and protect oneself, family, and the community.
Symptoms of Measles
Symptoms start with fever, cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes, followed by a rash beginning on the face and spreading across the body.
Fox News Digital sought additional comments from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health but received no response.
