Tragic Fall at Silver Falls State Park
A 20-year-old male hiker died in a tragic accident at Silver Falls State Park in Oregon. The incident occurred after he fell from a 177-foot waterfall. Park officials described it as a ‘horrific accident’.
The man, visiting from out of state, was at the park located over an hour south of Portland. According to reports from Central Oregon Daily, he ventured off the designated trail in search of a photo opportunity. This involved crossing a barrier and navigating above a creek situated directly above the falls.
The fall happened at the upper viewpoint of South Falls, the highest waterfall in the park, cascading into a large pool below. The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m.
Bystanders attempted to assist by performing CPR until emergency personnel arrived. Despite their efforts, the hiker was declared dead at the scene.
Chris Gilliand, regional manager of Silver Falls State Park, elaborated on the incident to Central Oregon Daily, stating, ‘It was a pretty horrific accident. A very tough situation.’
The Marion County Medical Examiner, along with search and rescue teams, managed the recovery operations at the base of the falls. Unger Funeral Chapel later assumed custody of the body.
Silver Falls State Park is renowned for its Trail of Ten Falls, a favored route that features numerous waterfalls and is visited by people from all over. South Falls stands out as a key attraction, with a trail allowing visitors to walk behind the waterfall.
The identity of the hiker has not been released. Park officials and Oregon State Police have been contacted for additional details.
