Trump’s Response to Reflecting Pool Damage
President Donald Trump attributed the damage to the newly renovated Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool to vandalism. In a detailed post on Truth Social, he stated that unknown individuals, including ABC News reporter Jonathan Karl, had interfered with the pool. The pool, which turned green shortly after a costly renovation, has been facing issues related to algae bloom and surface peeling.
Trump highlighted his administration’s efforts in renovating sites across Washington, D.C., citing improved public safety. He expressed his belief that recent damages were due to malicious actions, such as the use of chemicals to harm the pool’s surface. He also accused Karl of directly damaging the pool.
Investigations and Cleanup Efforts
The former president claimed the algae issue is largely under control and repairs will occur soon. Law enforcement is reportedly investigating the alleged vandalism. Scott Jennings, a former adviser to George W. Bush, commented on the situation, attributing it to individuals targeting Trump and praising the former president’s cleanup efforts.
Algae Bloom and Surface Peeling Concerns
The reflection pool, part of a $14 million renovation project, was designed to have “American flag blue” water. Shortly after its refill, the pool experienced heavy algae growth, turning the water green. The National Park Service crews are working to manage the algae and maintain water clarity using hydrogen peroxide and ozone-based filtration.
Experts note that algae blooms are common in shallow, sunlit water bodies, especially in warm weather. John Wilson Jr., President of Aqua Doc Lake and Pond, emphasized that algae thrives when conditions involve fresh stagnant water and sunlight.
The peeling of surface materials added to the concerns. Fragments of the surface coating were visible in the water, raising questions about the renovation’s durability. Tourists have reportedly handled or removed these loose pieces, potentially affecting the pool’s maintenance.
Officials describe the algae as part of initial startup challenges, connected to dormant supply lines and environmental factors. Crews continue working to address these issues before upcoming summer events on the National Mall.
