Cease-Fire Negotiations Amidst Tensions in Lebanon
Diplomatic endeavors on Friday focused on maintaining the tenuous agreement between Iran and the United States. This effort came after Iran withdrew from peace talks due to Israeli strikes in Lebanon. Eventually, Israel announced a cease-fire agreement with Hezbollah, Iran’s ally in Lebanon.
The temporary withdrawal by Iran from talks with the United States impacted the framework agreement recently signed by President Trump. Initial plans were for long-term peace discussions to commence shortly in Switzerland.
Despite the strains on the fragile truce with Iran, negotiations seemed to continue without indefinite postponement. Shipping activities increased through the Strait of Hormuz, although they remained below prewar levels.
Israel’s ambassador to the U.S., Yechiel Leiter, confirmed Israel’s commitment to an immediate cease-fire. President Trump reportedly urged Israeli leaders to agree to a cease-fire in Lebanon, describing it as “a little icing on the cake.” However, it is unclear if he had direct communication with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Hezbollah has not officially confirmed its agreement to the cease-fire.
The day’s developments highlighted the fragility of the U.S.-Iran agreement made this week and the crucial role of Lebanon. The agreement’s first point requires both countries and their allies to cease military operations, including in Lebanon. Yet, Israel and Hezbollah have not signed the agreement.
After the cease-fire was meant to start at 4 p.m. local time, Lebanon experienced relative calm. This followed severe Israeli bombing overnight, which resulted in 47 fatalities and 97 injuries, as reported by Lebanon’s health ministry. The ministry’s figures include both civilians and combatants.
The cease-fire was confirmed by officials from several countries, with Qatar and the United States cited as mediators. These officials, who verified the withdrawal of Iran from the talks, requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the diplomacy involved.
