A dramatic moment in the MotoGP world has resulted in a suspension for Marco Bezzechi, a key rider for the Aprilia Racing factory team. The incident, which has significant implications for the championship, was caught on camera.
Bezzechi’s team, Aprilia, currently leads both the teams’ and constructors’ championships. Heading into the Czech Grand Prix, Bezzechi also topped the riders’ standings, slightly ahead of his teammate Jorge Martin.
The altercation stemmed from a crash during the weekend’s sprint race. Bezzechi lost traction in a corner, leading him and his bike into the gravel trap. While crashes are common in MotoGP, ensuing conflicts with marshals are not.
Bezzechi was seen striking a marshal twice as they attempted to help recover his bike. The crash had already occurred on lap eight of the 10-lap sprint race, making point recovery highly unlikely.
This behavior did not serve Bezzechi well. Respect for track marshals is crucial, as they ensure the safety and functionality of races. Following this altercation, stewards imposed a one-race suspension, excluding Bezzechi from Sunday’s Grand Prix.
This suspension is a potential boon for Jorge Martin. With Bezzechi set to begin from P5 and Martin from P10, the gap in championship points might close. Martin’s performance in the sprint race, where he scored five points, now places him within 15 points of Bezzechi.
