The Impact of GLP-1 Drugs on the Bridal Industry
The popularity of GLP-1 medications is influencing how Americans shop for groceries, consume food in restaurants, and handle gym workouts. These drugs are also affecting the wedding industry. Bridal retailers are adapting by increasing inventory, speeding up orders, and handling more alterations due to significant body changes among brides, according to the Wall Street Journal. Some bridal shops now require brides-to-be to sign waivers acknowledging they are purchasing dresses that do not yet fit them.
A report mentions a New York bride who lost 50 pounds using GLP-1 medications and had to sign a waiver since the dress she ordered was three inches smaller in the waist than her current measurements. While such waivers existed in the past, their usage has become more prevalent.
A KFF poll reveals that about 12% of American adults are currently taking GLP-1 drugs aimed at weight loss and treating conditions like diabetes and heart disease. Another 18% have taken these medications at some point. More women (15%) than men (9%) are using GLP-1 drugs.
With more brides experiencing dramatic weight loss through GLP-1 drugs between their engagements and wedding days, bridal shops are adjusting dress sales practices. According to an online wedding planning company, Zola, 10% of couples planning weddings in 2026 are currently using a GLP-1, with another 10% considering it before their big day.
GLP-1-based weight-loss medications often result in a reduction of 10% to 15% of body weight. Studies have shown weight loss reaching up to 20%, as noted by the Mayo Clinic. The rising use of these drugs prompted David’s Bridal, the largest bridal retailer in the U.S., to introduce a ‘Fit Guarantee’ in May 2026. This guarantee assures customers that David’s will accommodate various sizes and fits, ensuring a perfect fit for every dress.
‘Fit Guarantee’ commitment:
- Applies to bridal gowns, bridesmaid dresses, prom attire, and other special occasion wear.
- Offers adjustments to dress sizes and tailoring to ensure the perfect fit.
David’s Bridal aims to alleviate ‘fit anxiety’ among shoppers, providing comfort whether the dress requires alterations for size reduction or expansion. The company’s website promises collaboration with their alterations team to ensure proper fit.
David’s Bridal CEO, Kelly Cook, explained to ABC News the necessity of catering to brides experiencing significant weight loss. She remarked that ‘size anxiety’ is more intense than previously observed.
Over the past year, David’s Bridal has reported a 50% rise in rush orders, with 20% of bridal customers opting for shorter dress-shopping timelines. Instead of purchasing dresses nine to 12 months in advance, more brides now choose to buy them six months or less before their weddings.
Bridal consultants note shifts in dress recommendations, anticipating continued weight loss among many brides. Bridal studio owner Natalie Harris advises brides expecting additional weight loss to select forgiving silhouettes with adjustable backs and flared waistlines.
Brides reveal that some shops require them to sign waivers when ordering dresses smaller than their current sizes, due to expected weight loss with GLP-1 drugs.
