School days often bring to mind the kid who swiped lunches. Similarly, sea lions never seem to move past that mischief.
Recently, a viral video shows a fisherman proudly showing off what seems to be his first yellowfin tuna. However, his moment of triumph shifts as a large sea lion enters the scene. The fisherman stands next to his boat with the prized catch when the cunning marine creature springs from the water, directly targeting the fish. Despite the man’s attempts, he cannot compete with the sea lion’s strength.
Ultimately, the fisherman relinquishes the fish. The sea lion seizes the tuna, causing the angler to step back in surprise as his catch vanishes into the sea.
Sea lions often disrupt fishing by grabbing catches, raising concerns about their effects on salmon and steelhead trout in the Pacific Northwest.
For viewers, it’s an amusing clip to watch from home. But for the fisherman, it is far less amusing after spending significant time trying to catch the tuna, only to see his efforts thwarted by an unexpected rival.
Experts recognize this behavior as “depredation,” where marine mammals steal fish from anglers or fishing vessels. Sea lions, known for their intelligence, quickly learn to associate fishing activities with easy meals.
In some locations, sea lions are adept at this thievery, allowing anglers to anticipate their bold attempts. Judging by the sea lion’s confidence in the video, this tuna grab is not the creature’s first crime.
While the fisherman achieved a milestone by catching his first yellowfin tuna, the catch was short-lived, meaning no fresh ahi dinner this time.
