Explosion at Qatar’s Gas Terminal After War-Related Bombing
An explosion occurred at Qatar’s main natural gas export terminal located in the Ras Laffan industrial area on Sunday night. This incident took place as workers attempted to restart operations following the terminal’s bombing by Iran during the recent conflict. The blast resulted in a fire that injured at least 54 individuals, and 18 people were reported missing hours after the event.
Qatar is a leading global producer of natural gas, and this explosion could further disrupt energy markets. The country had ceased production due to Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which had prevented shipments to clients. As Iran’s hold on the strait eased amid ongoing negotiations to end the war, Qatar sought to resume its export activities. However, the restart process led to the explosion and fire at the Barzan gas supply facility, according to the state-operated firm QatarEnergy.
The extent of the damage from the explosion remains uncertain. Initially, reports suggested only minor injuries, but Qatar’s Interior Ministry later revealed more severe casualty numbers. The Barzan plant had a capacity of about 1.4 billion standard cubic feet of sales gas per day, which supported local electricity production and was crucial for operating water desalination plants in the region’s arid environment.
QatarEnergy primarily owns the plant, with ExxonMobil holding a minor stake. The oil company has not yet commented on the incident. Previously, in March, an Iranian missile attack on Ras Laffan resulted in ‘extensive’ damage, prompting Qatar to halt production processes in response to the ongoing attacks from Iran.
Qatar and Iran share a vast offshore natural gas field in the Persian Gulf. Gas production in Qatar has contributed significantly to its economic prosperity, elevating its global status through initiatives like hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup, establishing the Al Jazeera news network, and participating in international mediation efforts, including negotiations in Switzerland between Iran and the United States.
