Smoke has blanketed parts of Los Angeles for six days following a fire at a warehouse in Boyle Heights. The blaze began last Wednesday at a 500,000-square-foot cold-food storage facility on South Los Palos Street.
The fire led to shelter-in-place orders and a state of emergency declaration over the weekend. Smoke continues to affect air quality, according to the South Coast Air Quality Management District, which extended its advisory on Sunday.
Air particulates reached ‘very unhealthy’ levels in several areas due to the fire. Affected regions include central Los Angeles County, San Gabriel Valley, East San Fernando Valley, and Northwest San Bernardino Valley.
Local residents should limit exposure by staying indoors and using air purifying systems. Council member Ysabel Jurado emphasized the community’s need for resources in light of daily disruptions and health concerns. She stated her commitment to advancing emergency response and public health protections.
In response, California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency. He assured that the state is mobilizing support to aid containment efforts and safeguard public health.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also issued a local emergency declaration to ensure resource allocation for ongoing firefighting operations. Relief spaces for affected families have been established by city and county officials.
The site belongs to Lineage, a cold storage company, which announced a $2 million donation to help those impacted. The fire originated on the rooftop during maintenance work by a subcontractor servicing solar arrays.
The Los Angeles Fire Department reported significant progress in battling the blaze. Crew actions included wall removal for better interior access and water application.
Improved smoke conditions are expected, although intermittent increases might occur as concealed fire areas are accessed. Images from social media depicted smoke near Dodger Stadium, impacting visibility and game conditions.
