Germany’s Plan to Invest in Defense Contractor KNDS

The German government has announced its intention to acquire a 40% stake in the defense contractor KNDS. KNDS produces military equipment, including the Leopard and Leclerc tanks. This move aims to bolster European defense production alongside France, a NATO ally.

Currently, France holds a 50% stake in KNDS, which was established in 2015 through the merger of Germany’s Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and France’s Nexter. The remaining share is owned by the German family behind Krauss-Maffei Wegmann.

KNDS is headquartered in Amsterdam and reported revenues of 4.4 billion euros (5 billion dollars) last year. It employs over 11,000 people.

European countries are increasing defense spending and production in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine and concerns about the unpredictability of U.S. policies. The German government stated that the planned investment would ensure long-term influence over a company that is vital to European security and defense capabilities. This participation aims to enhance national industrial value creation, technological sovereignty, and the protection of security interests and key technologies in Germany.

A separate joint statement revealed that Germany and France have agreed on the strategy and governance for KNDS. They aim to become joint shareholders with equal participation levels for both countries. The statement did not specify the timing or final share levels but mentioned that the agreement sets the stage for a potential KNDS IPO soon.

The governments emphasized their shared determination to boost Europe’s industrial and defense capabilities, support their armed forces, and strengthen long-term European sovereignty.

Besides tanks, KNDS also produces infantry fighting vehicles like the Puma and armored personnel carriers such as the Boxer and Dingo.
