Lionel Messi Sets New World Cup Scoring Record
Lionel Messi achieved a historic milestone by breaking the World Cup scoring record during Argentina’s match against Austria in Arlington, Texas. With his 17th goal, Messi surpassed the previous record, coming in the 38th minute of the game. This record-setting goal arrived just days before his 39th birthday, amid personal concerns about his ailing father back home.
Messi’s achievement marked the sixth consecutive World Cup game in which he has scored, placing him alongside France’s Just Fontaine and Brazil’s Jairzinho. Previously, Messi equaled Germany’s Miroslav Klose with 16 goals after a hat trick against Algeria in the Group J opener.
“I expect my record to fall in this tournament,” Klose stated in an interview, acknowledging the expanded competition format and expressing admiration for Messi’s talents.
In the match against Austria, Messi initially missed a penalty kick in the ninth minute, leading to a gasp from the fans. Despite the miss, Messi followed through with a remarkable goal that saw him overcome the opposing goalkeeper, Alexander Schlager.
Messi’s World Cup journey began in Germany 20 years ago, with his first appearance and goal coming on that debut. As he plays in his sixth World Cup, Monday marked his FIFA-record 28th tournament match.
The penalty kick opportunity arose when Lautaro Martinez was tackled in the box by Xaver Schlager and Stefan Posch, drawing a review and ultimately a penalty decision.
Off-field, Messi’s family disclosed his father’s unspecified medical treatment. Jorge Messi, integral to Messi’s career, continues to support him as an agent and manager. Messi’s emotional response after scoring against Algeria highlighted personal struggles unrelated to soccer.
