The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced adjustments to travel regulations for Iran’s national soccer team as they prepare for their final group-stage match against Egypt in Seattle during the World Cup. This decision marks a change from previous stringent logistical rules.
A DHS spokesperson confirmed that the team, known as “Team Melli,” will be allowed to travel from their base in Tijuana, Mexico, to the United States two days before their match on Friday, June 26. This adjustment grants them an additional day for preparation compared to previous matches. However, the team is required to exit the U.S. immediately after the match.
The DHS noted that this exception has been made to prioritize safety on the pitch, considering ongoing diplomatic tensions and previous visa denials affecting essential team staff.
The administration emphasized the adjustment’s focus on safety and preparation, the spokesperson stated, highlighting the importance of the game.
This change adds to the logistical challenges the Iranian team has faced since setting up their training camp in Mexico. The team has already encountered multiple visa denials, strict border curfews, and last-minute security updates during their stay.
This is a breaking news story. More updates will be provided as information becomes available.
