North Carolina State Representative Jennifer Balkcom has been selected as the new Republican nominee for the 11th Congressional District. This follows the recent decision by incumbent Representative Chuck Edwards to end his re-election campaign.
The selection was made by the North Carolina Republican Party 11th Congressional District Executive Committee, according to reports. U.S. Senator Ted Budd and U.S. Representative Greg Murphy, both from North Carolina, have shown their support for Balkcom’s candidacy.
I’m blessed to receive the Republican nomination for the 11th Congressional District,
Balkcom said in a statement shared by reporters. She expressed concerns over the direction of the Democratic Party, citing what she perceives as their embrace of extremism.
Balkcom will compete against Democratic candidate Jamie Ager in the upcoming general election. Zach Almond, executive director of the North Carolina Republican Party, expressed confidence in Balkcom’s selection. He noted her experience in agriculture, banking, and finance, emphasizing her alignment with the values of Western North Carolina.
Previously, Rep. Chuck Edwards announced his withdrawal from the re-election race, choosing to complete his current term. His decision followed a report from the House Committee on Ethics that recommended censure due to inappropriate conduct involving young female staffers. The report detailed behaviors including giving gifts, making comments on appearance, and inviting staffers to private dinners and trips.
Edwards’ announcement mentioned his gratitude for the opportunity to serve and his intention to focus on completing his term. Despite denying any sexual intent, Edwards’ actions were perceived as inappropriate by the committee.
