Recently, an amusing incident highlighted the unpredictability of nature. During the LIV Golf event at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster, pro golfer Charl Schwartzel faced an unusual challenge. On the seventh hole, a largemouth bass consumed his golf ball as it rolled into a water hazard.

A Golfing Incident with Nature

Schwartzel’s ball, after a successful strike on the 134-yard, par-3 hole, spun backwards, resulting in an unexpected outcome. As the ball hit the pond, a largemouth bass swiftly engulfed it, demonstrating nature’s unpredictability.

Largemouth bass are known as ambush predators. Their typical diet includes fish, crayfish, and frogs. They can also consume live baits like lizards, insects, and small mice. Although a golf ball isn’t edible, the bass reacted instinctively.

This incident, though unusual, underscores how wildlife often makes appearances on golf courses. Animals such as alligators, snakes, birds, and even bears have been known to interrupt the game.

Schwartzel, a seasoned golfer with several notable titles, faced this quirky situation during the tournament held from August 6-9. Despite the disruption, he continued the tournament play, following the rules of golf which state no penalty occurs if an outside influence moves a ball at rest. However, since his ball was already in the penalty area, he took a one-stroke penalty.
