The Oklahoma City Thunder have added another promising talent to their roster by selecting Aday Mara with the No. 12 pick in the 2026 NBA draft. Mara, a standout center from Michigan, is known for his remarkable skills and physical attributes, making him one of the most intriguing prospects in this year’s draft class.
Mara stands at an imposing 7-foot-3 and weighs 260 pounds. He had an impressive season at Michigan, averaging 12.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 2.6 blocks per game. His exceptional field goal percentage of 66.8% highlights his efficiency on the court. His defensive abilities helped him earn the title of Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, in addition to All-Big Ten honors, while leading his team to a national championship victory.
The choice of Mara adds depth to the Thunder’s already strong lineup. Their core players, including Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and Chet Holmgren, have consistently proven themselves as formidable competitors. However, the San Antonio Spurs recently eliminated the Thunder from the Western Conference Finals. Victor Wembanyama, along with Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper, has made the Spurs key contenders in the conference.
The Western Conference remains competitive, with teams like the Los Angeles Lakers with Luka Doncic, the Denver Nuggets with Nikola Jokic, and others such as the Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Clippers, and Minnesota Timberwolves all vying for the top spot. The Spurs, however, have become the team that the Thunder need to overcome.
Mara may not single-handedly stop Wembanyama, as even seasoned league veterans struggle to contain him. But Mara’s size, defensive prowess, and mobility offer the Thunder a valuable asset in their defensive strategy. Additionally, Mara is already working on developing a 3-point shot, which could significantly enhance his versatility on the court. With these skills, Mara could potentially become the highlight of this year’s draft for Oklahoma City.
