Michael Jackson, known as the King of Pop, is proving his dominance at the box office with his biopic, “Michael.” Nearly two decades after his passing, the film is approaching the $1 billion milestone.
The film has set a new record as the highest-grossing biopic of all time. It surpasses Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” which held the previous record.
“Michael” debuted on April 24 and has earned $977 million, overtaking “Oppenheimer’s” $975 million. The third spot is held by Queen’s 2018 biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody,” with a collection of $911 million.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, “Michael” chronicles the pop star’s journey from the Jackson 5 to his solo career. Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s real-life nephew, stars as the pop icon. Colman Domingo and Nia Long play the roles of Michael’s parents, Joe and Katherine.
Despite impressive box office success, critical reception was mixed. The Tomatometer places the film at 38%, while Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter shows a 97% audience rating. Fans believe this confirms Jackson’s enduring legacy, with one saying, “It was only a matter of time. The King of Pop.”
Fans celebrated the film’s achievements on social media, acknowledging the unique appeal of Jackson’s story. One pointed out the difference in content ratings between “Michael,” rated PG-13, and “Oppenheimer,” rated R.
The movie made $97 million domestically and $217 million internationally on its opening. It continues to excel at the box office despite some criticism.
Critics have noted the film doesn’t address every controversial aspect of the singer’s life. Regardless, the film is nearing the $1 billion mark.
“Oppenheimer” won several accolades at the 96th Academy Awards, earning seven awards out of 13 nominations, including Best Director for Nolan and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy.
