The Hamptons, a region appreciated for its magnificent estates and beaches, demonstrates a striking contrast between its seasonal residents and the workers who maintain these luxurious properties.
Absent Owners, Present Workforce
During early May, the affluent homeowners of the Hamptons are predominantly away in New York City. Despite their absence, the region is still lively with activity as workers prepare these homes for the owners’ arrival. Traffic congestion peaks at rush hour, indicating bustling preparations even without the residents.
In Southampton, workers often stand ready for labor near a local 7-Eleven.
Invisible Interactions and Contrast
Long Island’s southeastern tip is characterized by a dual population dynamic. The wealthy inhabitants are infrequent visitors, while the workforce is a constant yet feels out of place. These two groups traverse the same physical spaces but rarely engage with each other. For instance, those tasked with cleaning beachfront mansion windows ensure their presence remains unnoticed by those who gaze through these pristine panes.
When skyscraper lights illuminate the city on weekends, traces of the workers are evident only in the barren patches left on the field where day laborers congregate during weekdays.
The ‘Trade Parade’
On weekends, Southampton’s transformation is evident as buses transport eager weekenders eastward from the city. Concurrently, the opposite lanes teem with trucks and vans identified with landscaping, construction, and cleaning service logos, an event commonly referred to as the ‘trade parade’ by locals.
