The aftermath of recent earthquakes in Venezuela has shifted focus to long-term challenges that go beyond immediate relief efforts. A major concern is the devastation of clean water infrastructure, posing risks for illness outbreaks such as cholera and typhoid fever.
Susana Arroyo, spokesperson for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, reported the collapse of the water distribution system in affected areas. In La Guaira, one of the states severely impacted, residents are reliant on bottled water for daily activities like bathing, brushing teeth, washing hands, and cooking.
Arroyo also highlighted the destruction of the sewage system, which severely limits access to functional toilets and sanitation facilities.
Prior to the earthquake, La Guaira state residents faced ongoing water access issues, often depending on mobile water tankers for essential needs. The recent earthquakes have compounded these existing problems, raising concerns about potential disease outbreaks due to contaminated water sources.
