A significant heat wave that has affected the Midwest this week is expanding toward the East, bringing potential record-breaking temperatures to millions more individuals. Relief for much of the country is not expected until the weekend.
More than 160 million people are experiencing extreme heat warnings or advisories. Many are facing their second or third consecutive day of severe warnings, advising them to avoid outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.
High levels of humidity are exacerbating triple-digit temperatures, leading to intense heat index readings. Emergency officials and meteorologists emphasize that the heat index provides a more accurate representation of outdoor conditions than temperature alone. On Tuesday, the heat index reached alarming levels: Chicago recorded 106 degrees; north of Milwaukee, it was 113 degrees; Cleveland saw 103 degrees; Southern Illinois also experienced 113 degrees. On Wednesday, cities from Kansas City to Boston are expected to experience heat index values between 100 and 115 degrees.
Radley Horton, a professor at Columbia University’s Climate School, noted the particularly high humidity in this heat wave. ‘When the air moisture is high, it keeps nights warmer,’ Dr. Horton explained. ‘Temperature fluctuations between day and night are less pronounced.’
