Recently, Tyler Adams, midfielder of the United States men’s national team (USMNT), spoke on FS1’s ‘First Things First’. He highlighted Malik Tillman as a standout player for the USMNT during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
‘He creates so many chances for us,’ Adams said. ‘He’s such an important player. He’s a guy that plays at the highest level in Champions League and in the Bundesliga.’
Currently, soccer fans across the U.S. are well aware of Tillman’s impact. In a crucial match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1, Tillman scored a phenomenal free kick. His goal secured a 2-0 victory for the USMNT in the Round of 32.
This unforgettable goal has quickly gained comparisons to Landon Donovan’s famous score against Algeria in the 2010 World Cup. Tillman’s goal may go down in history as one of the best for the USMNT. He added to the moment’s drama by showing his bloodied foot after the match, explaining he had switched cleats just before scoring.
As the USMNT moves to face Belgium on July 6 in the Round of 16, Tillman will be essential in creating scoring opportunities. This need grew more significant after Folarin Balogun, a key striker who netted a goal in the Bosnia match’s 45th minute, received a red card in the 64th minute. According to FIFA’s World Cup regulations, the U.S. cannot contest Balogun’s red card, as reported by Tom Bogert, making him ineligible for the next game.
Although Balogun leads the USMNT with three goals, the team has managed to find other goal scorers. Players like Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie have also shown potential for scoring. A victory against Belgium would secure a spot in the quarterfinals, a feat not achieved by the USMNT since the 2002 World Cup. The U.S. team’s only higher finish was in the inaugural 1930 World Cup.
