Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has endorsed Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary. This race is significant as it represents a confrontation between the party’s progressive wing and its establishment.
Abdul El-Sayed, if elected, could become the first Muslim senator in the United States. He has received support from progressive figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders. His main opponents include centrist Rep. Haley Stevens, indirectly supported by Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer.
Some Democratic leaders, like Schumer, believe Stevens is more electable than El-Sayed. They are concerned El-Sayed’s controversial statements might risk the party’s hold on the Senate seat. This seat is important as Democrats aim to regain Senate control in the upcoming elections.
“Despite our ideological differences, every single one of us sees this moment as existential.”
In an interview with the New York Times, Ocasio-Cortez expressed her belief in El-Sayed’s ability to unite the party and improve their chances of winning.
El-Sayed’s campaign champions issues like Medicare for all and abolishing ICE. He has criticized Israel’s actions against Palestinians as genocide and vows not to accept PAC donations.
Conversely, Stevens benefits from significant super PAC spending, including funds from entities aligned with Israel. State Sen. Mallory McMorrow, the third major candidate, positions herself as a progressive between El-Sayed and Stevens.
In polling, El-Sayed leads the Democratic candidates. Ocasio-Cortez has also endorsed him in past campaigns, including his 2018 gubernatorial run.
The winner of the Democratic primary will face former Rep. Mike Rogers in the general election. Rogers is likely to secure the Republican nomination, having narrowly lost the Senate seat in 2024.
The Senate race in Michigan is currently rated as a toss-up, highlighting its competitiveness.
The Michigan GOP criticized Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement, calling it predictable. They contend that the race contrasts AOC and El-Sayed’s agenda with the ‘commonsense’ values of Michigan families.
