A federal judge expressed significant frustration towards the Trump administration’s plans for a new golf course in Washington. Judge Ana C. Reyes criticsized the Justice Department’s handling of the project during a heated court hearing on Thursday.
Judge Reyes, presiding over the Federal District Court in Washington, questioned Michael Robertson, a government lawyer, about the specific timeline and vision for the construction. Robertson struggled to provide detailed answers, leading Reyes to express impatience with the government’s apparent lack of transparency.
This case is part of a series of disputes between federal judges and the Trump administration concerning the president’s initiatives to alter various parts of the capital during his second term. These initiatives include not just the golf course, but other construction projects, like a ballroom replacing the East Wing of the White House.
At the hearing, Judge Reyes drew attention to instances where President Trump allegedly pushed forward projects without waiting for formal government acknowledgment. She questioned the consistency between public statements made by the President and the Secretary of the Interior and the denials presented in court. “I’m not going to have the president of the United States and the secretary of interior say something in the public and then come in here in court and say that what they’re saying isn’t actually what they’re saying,” she stated.
The judge dismissed the administration’s claims that the golf course redevelopment is not substantially underway, pointing to the president’s explicit plans to transform the current East Potomac Golf Links into a championship-level course capable of hosting professional tournaments.
