The Federal Bureau of Investigation has deployed 260 investigative analysts in Fulton County, Georgia, to focus on a priority investigation concerning the 2020 election. This effort underscores former President Trump’s continued endeavors to support his unfounded claims about election fraud in the state.
An internal memo obtained by The New York Times outlines this operation, confirming the involvement of Kash Patel, the director of the FBI, in coordinating the deployment. These analysts are tasked with conducting approximately 708 records checks, although the specifics of the records remain undisclosed.
The assignment of a significant number of FBI personnel to Georgia’s most populous county aligns with the Department of Justice’s ongoing criminal inquiry into the 2020 election. Earlier in January, federal agents conducted a raid on a Fulton County election warehouse, confiscating more than 600 boxes containing election materials, including original ballots from 2020.
The affidavit justifying this raid relied significantly on previously refuted claims regarding alleged ballot anomalies. These theories have been revitalized within the White House by Kurt Olsen, an advocate of election denial working under the Trump administration, who triggered the current proceedings as per the affidavit details.
The 2020 presidential election has been one of the most scrutinized in modern history. Over the span of more than five years, various conspiracy theories, including false assertions about mail ballots, election workers, and voting machines, have undergone investigation. These inquiries, conducted by election officials from both political parties, as well as Congress members, judges, and law enforcement, have consistently debunked such allegations.
Despite extensive debunking, Mr. Trump and his supporters persist in their attempts to validate numerous disproven points, which has resulted in eroding public confidence and trust in American electoral processes. Their actions include advocating for federal election legislation known as the SAVE America Act, criticized by voting rights advocates for potentially complicating the voting process for many Americans.
