Controversy Surrounds Maine’s Candidate Over Old Online Posts
Graham Platner, a Democratic Senate candidate in Maine, faces backlash for past social media posts. These posts revealed controversial remarks about race, sexuality, and political violence. Platner, a 41-year-old Marine Corps veteran, attributed his behavior to depression and PTSD from combat duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. He explained his use of crude humor and offensive language resulted from his service experience.
Platner has expressed regret over these comments, emphasizing that they do not reflect his current values. He urged voters to assess him based on who he is today, not on his previous internet writings.
I’m sorry for this. Just know that it’s not reflective at all of who I am.
Deleted Reddit Posts Resurface
Although Platner no longer uses the “p-Hustle” username on Reddit, media outlets have made his deleted posts readily accessible. This has intensified criticism as he seeks to challenge incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins in Maine.
- Racial Stereotypes: Platner once wrote, “Why don’t black people tip?” He expressed surprise over tipping habits in his bartender experience. This comment has received significant attention.
- Use of Slurs: Platner’s posts included derogatory terms against homosexuals and people with mental disabilities. He used variations of certain slurs and apologized for these remarks. Despite the usage of such language, he advocated for the acceptance of homosexuals in the military.
Political and Ideological Views
Platner’s posts sometimes disclosed his political views, moving leftward after military service. He described himself as embracing communist beliefs in 2021, expressing support for Marxism. He distanced himself from this ideology in later interviews.
I got older and became a communist.
Platner also professed controversial views on political violence, endorsing deadly force in specific situations. These comments further fueled criticism during his campaign.
Animal Welfare Comments
Other posts from Platner contained unsettling opinions on animals. In one post, he suggested dropping a heavy kettlebell to kill mice, sparking concern among commentators.
In defense of certain animal practices, Platner argued that people distant from nature misunderstand animal-human interactions, generating different reactions from the public.
Military Criticisms
Platner critiqued a video showing a U.S. soldier in combat, stating the soldier made numerous mistakes while under enemy fire. The specific focus of these criticisms was on decisions made in small unit tactics.
Allegations Regarding Sex Workers
Platner’s posts included remarks about sex workers in Latin America, implying knowledge about the topic. These comments faced scrutiny, mirroring his general tendency for controversial humor.
According to Bernadette Breslin, a spokesperson for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, Platner’s comments are seen as damaging to various communities and incompatible with the values held by Mainers.
Platner’s perverted and bigoted comments are disqualifying… Mainers won’t excuse them in November.
