LeBron James completed his eighth season with the Los Angeles Lakers, facing a tough end as the team was swept in the Western Conference semifinals by the Oklahoma City Thunder. This exit has sparked discussions about James’ NBA future and the possibility of him playing a 24th season.
James has not made a decision about his basketball future. He plans to spend time with his family before deciding. On May 11, he stated, “I don’t know what the future holds for me, obviously, as it stands right now tonight. I’ve got a lot of time now. I think I said it last year after we lost to Minnesota. I’ll go back and recalibrate with my family and talk with them and spend some time with them, and then when the time comes, you guys will know what I decide to do.”
Speculation about his future is growing. His name is associated with teams like the Lakers, Warriors, and a potential return to the Cavaliers in Cleveland, where his career began.
James attended Game Four of the Eastern Conference Second Round Playoffs in Cleveland on May 13, 2024. If he returns to Ohio, it would be his third stint with the Cavaliers. He returned in 2014 after playing for the Miami Heat and won Cleveland its first NBA title in 2016.
The Cavaliers lost Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals to the New York Knicks. On social media, James hinted at a possible return to Cleveland. He reportedly liked an Instagram post suggesting his return to the Cavaliers.
Despite interest, financial issues pose challenges for the Cavaliers if they pursue James. The 41-year-old would need to accept a pay cut, likely through a sign-and-trade deal with the Lakers. The Cavaliers have large contracts, including Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley, each earning over $50 million next season. James Harden might exercise a $42.3 million player option, and Jarrett Allen is expected to have a salary cap hit of about $28 million next season.
James played well during the 2025-26 regular season, averaging 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists. The sports world watches closely as he decides on his next move.
