Philadelphia Parade Canceled Due to Extreme Heat
As the United States marks its 250th anniversary, a scheduled parade in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was canceled due to expected extreme heat. Welcome America Inc. announced the decision on social media, highlighting safety concerns. The city’s social media confirmed the cancellation, stating, “Due to the extreme heat, the Salute to Independence Semiquincentennial Parade is cancelled.”

The National Weather Service Philadelphia/Mount Holly had predicted a potential high of 104° at Philadelphia International Airport. If reached, it would be the hottest temperature recorded there since July 1966. City Health Commissioner Palak Raval-Nelson extended the city’s “Heat Health Emergency” until Sunday evening.
The parade was set to feature floats and marching bands. Michael DelBene, President and CEO of Welcome America Inc., emphasized that safety was the primary concern. He expressed regret over the cancellation, noting the extensive planning by Todd Marcocci and Under the Sun Productions and the parade groups.
“As much as this decision pains everyone inside our organization, we simply cannot host this event under these dangerous heat conditions,” DelBene stated.
Despite the cancellation, the organization’s commitment to safety remains unchanged. While community events are part of its mission, ensuring the well-being of staff, guests, and participants is its top priority.
