The United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) secured a significant win against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday. However, they face a challenge in their next match against Belgium due to the absence of their star striker, Folarin Balogun. Balogun received a contentious red card in the second half, leading to a suspension.
On Friday, FIFA confirmed that Balogun’s suspension would only last for one match. This decision is a relief for the US team. Initially, there were concerns about the possibility of an extended suspension, but FIFA opted not to add additional games to Balogun’s penalty.
The US has no means to appeal the ruling, so their hopes rested on the suspension being restricted to one match. Balogun commented on the event, expressing regret and asserting that the red card was unintentional. He felt a yellow card would have sufficed but acknowledged the referee’s decision.
Balogun, who leads the team with three goals in this tournament, will miss the upcoming Monday match against Belgium in Seattle. If the US can overcome Belgium, they will benefit from Balogun’s return for the quarterfinals.
