Michelle Cottle Criticizes Democratic Fundraising Tactics
Michelle Cottle, an opinion writer for the New York Times, recently criticized the Democratic Party, saying that “few people are excited to invest in an insecure loser.” Her remarks appeared in an article titled “This Pathetic Groveling Is No Way to Rebuild a Party.”
Cottle discussed the Democratic Party’s fundraising approach, mocking it for resembling messages from an apologetic partner. She described email subject lines like “Can I explain?” and “Sorry to reach out on a Sunday,” which indicate desperation and insecurity rather than strength.
According to Cottle, these messages convey a sense of pleading and regret, which do not inspire confidence. Instead of donating, she feels compelled to suggest group therapy for the party. While acknowledging the Democrats’ frustration over losing to former President Donald Trump, she advises against public despair, especially in fundraising efforts. She suggests that the Democrats must restore self-respect to encourage voter support.
In critiquing Republican fundraising, Cottle humorously noted their tendency to use threats like “Give us $20 right now or Barack, Hillary, and AOC will send their minions to your house.” Despite this, she acknowledged the Republicans’ ability to instill a sense of pride and belonging in their supporters.
Cottle points out that the Republicans’ success stems from appealing to primal instincts such as pride. However, she argues that this also involves exclusion, a strategy not suitable for Democrats. She identifies this reliance on division and hatred as a central issue with Trumpism.
Comparatively, Cottle reflects that Obama-era optimism, despite sometimes appearing outdated, offered hope. Democrats should aim to make voters feel proud of supporting their party once more.
