The New York Knicks’ long-awaited championship win is prompting changes to their team lineup after 53 years. While they managed to retain Jose Alvarado, the first major change is Mitchell Robinson’s move to the Boston Celtics. He signed a three-year contract.
Robinson’s departure stirred strong reactions among teammates like Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, and OG Anunoby, who responded to his farewell post on Instagram. Robinson’s message to Anunoby suggested efforts to stay with the Knicks were not reciprocated. He mentioned, “I tried brother I didn’t want this to happen hopefully the truth comes out at some point. I’m gonna miss you big dawg! Keep being great,” in response to Anunoby’s sad emoji.
‘I tried brother I didn’t want this to happen hopefully the truth comes out at some point. I’m gonna miss you big dawg! Keep being great,’ Robinson replied.
Team owner James Dolan had previously stated post-championship that he would avoid exceeding the NBA’s salary cap threshold, calling such a move “suicidal.” This was a clear indication that the Knicks were on the verge of a roster overhaul. Jalen Brunson is also expected to address the considerable salary reduction he took to aid in the Knicks’ title victory.
Robinson’s significant contribution came in the Knicks’ Finals against the San Antonio Spurs. His offensive rebound from a missed free throw was crucial in sealing the win. Drafted as a second-round pick in 2018, Robinson experienced both the challenges and triumphs with the Knicks, including a stark 17-65 record in his first season.
Now, Robinson transitions to the Celtics, a team likely undergoing its makeover just as he departs with the title of NBA Champion.
