Faded Glory: The Decline of the Declaration of Independence as a Celebration Centerpiece
Historical Significance Diminished
The United States celebrated its centennial in 1876, with the Declaration of Independence as the focal point. The document was brought from Washington to Philadelphia, becoming the star attraction of the Centennial Exhibition, the first official World’s Fair in the U.S. Nine million people attended, significant given the nation’s 46 million population at the time.
Current Celebrations Lacking Focus
Today the Declaration remains in Washington, housed at the National Archives under bulletproof glass and protected by inert gases. Unlike past celebrations, it is less prominent. Recent events, such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship on the White House lawn and the upcoming Freedom 250 Grand Prix, highlight this shift.
Administration’s Lack of Emphasis
A former U.S. archivist, Colleen J. Shogan, remarked that official activities have not prioritized the document. Her dismissal from the administration shortly after Trump’s presidency starts drew attention. Speculation about the dismissal links it to Trump’s handling of documents at Mar-a-Lago.
Public Engagement Shift
On the 250th anniversary of when Jefferson finalized the Declaration’s text, there is little crowd at the Archives’ rotunda. Despite its historical significance, the document no longer garners the same public attention.
