Strong thunderstorms led to extensive power outages across the upper Midwest, Northeast USA, and southern Ontario, Canada. The storms occurred in the midst of a heat wave late Friday, impacting about one million customers. The outages extended from Illinois to New York and into Ontario, with downed power lines identified as a major cause.
The combination of extreme heat and power failures triggered safety alerts. New York City’s Mayor Zohran Mamdani urged those without power to seek overnight cooling centers. Con Edison, which supplies power to much of the city, reported outages across the five boroughs and Westchester County, attributing this to a surge in grid demand driven by ongoing heat.
New Jersey’s Governor Mikie Sherrill reported significant power losses in the state’s northern and central counties due to severe storms. These storms also disrupted several train services, according to NJ Transit. The Warren township police, located 30 miles west of New York City, cautioned that power restoration efforts might take a long time due to widespread damage.
The small borough of Alburtis in eastern Pennsylvania declared a state of emergency after the storm caused wind damage, downed trees, and power line failures. Crews worked diligently to restore power in the affected areas, as reported by the local fire department.
In Michigan, DTE Energy and Consumers Energy sent crews to address numerous outages, with a restoration target set for Monday night for 95% of affected customers. Northern Ohio also experienced a flood of emergency calls for downed power lines and trees, with the Hambden and Chardon fire departments responding.
Tennessee was not spared, as severe storms also caused widespread outages, confirmed by the utility EPB. Across the border in Ontario, Canada, customers faced similar power losses. Essex Powerlines and Hydro One utilities reported ongoing efforts to repair extensive damage due to previous thunderstorms.
The combination of intense heat and widespread outages underscores the importance of emergency preparedness and the challenges extreme weather can present.
