Controversy Over Israel and Antisemitism in Richmond, California
Richmond, California, a city known for its progressive politics, has recently become a focal point for discussions on Israel and antisemitism. Under the leadership of Democratic socialist-aligned Mayor Eduardo Martinez, local issues like housing and crime were overshadowed by debates following Hamas’ attacks on October 7. Jewish leaders and residents accused Martinez of crossing from legitimate criticism to antisemitic rhetoric.
Stephen London, a Jewish resident, began following local politics after Richmond passed a ceasefire resolution linked to the attacks. He questioned why the city’s leadership prioritized a conflict far away. The resolution, passed in October 2023, expressed solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, accusing Israel of ethnic cleansing and collective punishment. This move troubled many Jewish residents and leaders, who felt it justified Hamas’ attack more than it criticized Israeli policies.
“Whatever your politics are about the Middle East, what does it have to do with Richmond?” London asked Fox News Digital.
The controversy intensified after Martinez’s participation in the 2025 People’s Conference for Palestine in Detroit. Seen wearing a hat with a controversial acronym and comparing himself to Palestinians, Martinez faced severe criticism. His actions after a Hanukkah attack in Bondi Beach, Australia, were particularly criticized. Posts on LinkedIn about the massacre, which were seen as offensive and conspiratorial, led to calls for his resignation.
Martinez later apologized on Facebook, admitting he didn’t fully understand the content he reposted and expressing regret. Despite the apology, reactions were mixed, with some viewing his stance as justified while others criticized the apology as insufficient or insincere.
As Martinez prepares for reelection, the Richmond Progressive Alliance, a coalition influential in city politics, chose to support Councilmember Claudia Jimenez instead. This decision might be seen as distancing from Martinez due to his controversial actions.
The situation in Richmond highlights broader questions about how Jewish communities respond to local political debates on Israel. Tyler Gregory, CEO of the Jewish Community Relations Council, emphasized choosing battles wisely. He noted the need to collaborate with elected officials on local issues but also to intervene when antisemitic lines are crossed.
In the Bay Area and beyond, debates on Israel have become more common in local politics. Similar controversies have arisen in New York City, with Mayor Zohran Mamdani criticized for his stance on similar issues. Despite his concerns, London believes Richmond is managing better than other cities, such as New York.
